Writer Spotlight: Jorma Kansanen

November 26, 2021 Sarah Foil

For the past twenty-five years, Jorma Kansanen has worked in the newspaper and media business. His name has been seen on the byline of publications from Manchester, England to San Diego, California.

For his whole life, the Canadian-born Finnish American has been a fantasy and science-fiction aficionado. From “The Hobbit” and the original “Star Wars” as a child to diving head first into “Game Of Thrones” and “The Mandalorian” as an adult, Jorma has immersed himself in imagination.

Involved primarily in the sport of women’s soccer since 1999, Mr. Kansanen has worked from the coaches’ bench in Division I collegiate sports to the press box as a Hall Of Fame member of the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL).

After helping launch United Women’s Soccer (UWS) in 2016 – a national semi-professional league featuring teams from across the United States and Canada – Jorma has completed the first edition of a fantasy/science fiction book series based in Western Massachusetts.

The UMass-Amherst alum has called this bucolic part of the Commonwealth home since 1993. The region’s combination of education, multiculturalism, beauty, and mystery (plus the love of outdoor sports like soccer) forms the backbone of his first book.

His longtime experience in the sport of soccer, sports PR, radio, and television combined with his life-long love of these literary genres has prepared him for this moment. A moment where his head and heart converge to tell the story of a multi-dimensional world of discovery.
