Why I'm Not Writing This Week 1/3

Why I'm Not Writing This Week.png

It’s a new year and a whole new list of reasons for Why I’m Not Writing!

If you’re not familiar with this series, just know that the only thing writers love more than writing is avoiding writing. And I am definitely no exception. Every Friday, I list five things that distracted me from my writing this week.

I encourage you to share with me your reasons for not writing every week too and I’ll share my favorites in the latest edition.

Welcome Back

After a month-long break, I’m back! I had a great hiatus spending time with my family, relaxing and working on this beautiful new design. There are a few significant changes that you’ll notice right away, but I’ll be going into more details on my Tuesday blog post about all the changes for 2020. Thank you so much to all my readers who were patient with me in December as I took some much needed time off.

Our Family Is Growing

And on to the biggest reason I needed to take a break… My husband and I found out just a couple of months ago that we are having a baby. We are very excited for our family to be growing and will be welcoming our little boy home in July. So far, it’s been a pretty turbulent pregnancy, with some rough morning sickness, headaches and fatigue, but I’m looking forward to our first trimester ending soon and moving on to better days.

Happy New Year

Welcome to the year 2020. It’s hard to be believe, but we are in a whole new decade. We hosted a small and casual get together with some of our closest friends to ring in the new year. It was total blast and if the first few minutes of the year are any reference, this might be the best year yet. I wish only amazing things to you and yours this year.

Jane Austen Mood

For some reason, lately, I’ve been in a huge Jane Austen movie-binge mood. It started with a casual watch of one of my favorite movies, the 2005 Joe Wright adaption of Pride and Prejudice and then grew to a watch of the hilarious Love & Friendship. Normally, that would be where I stopped but I continued on to watch the YouTube adaption of Pride and Prejudice, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. If you’ve never watched it before, I recommend it!

Unexpected Weather

Despite it being January, our weather has been anything but January-esque. The mornings start out freezing, which I would normally expect, but things warm up to the mid-60s in the afternoon. It’s hard to predict what to wear where you go through three seasons in a day. It’s also wreaked absolute havoc on my allergies. I’m hoping for more stable weather, and maybe some snow, soon.

Here Are My Favorites reasons For Not Writing From You, My Readers:

Michael said: “I didn’t write this week because I was too busy watching reruns of Sex and the City. You got to love Mr Big!”

And Stacy “didn't write for a week because of holidays and parties. 🥳”

Meanwhile, Rachel said, “Lol I actually DID write this week! That’s because I go back to teaching HS and Monday and still have some grading and prep I should do before break ends. Rather than do that, I procrastinated and avoided that like the plague and immersed myself in my WIP. 😂”

“One of my subscribers suggested a sci-fi tv show that I've never seen with elements similar to my book series and I've done nothing but binge watch it for the last two weeks. Season 3 of 5 now. Lol,” said Sara.

What The Truman Show Taught Me About Settings
April 9, 2018

Recently, my husband and I watched The Truman Show on Netflix. I had first watched this movie in middle school as a part of my language arts class. It had a huge impact on me and when I found out Daniel had never seen it before, I was excited to show it to him. The movie lived up to my memory and, in talking to Daniel about it, it also gave me a writing epiphany!

Speed Up or Slow Down? How to Ace Your Fiction Pace - A Guest Post By Margaret McNellis
January 22, 2018

Pacing in fiction has always been one of my great struggles because I get excited about a scene idea and rush to get there. It’s finally sinking in though that I need to slow down in order to get the interiority I want for my narrator and protagonist. But how do you slow down the pace of a scene? The trick is knowing when to show versus tell.

10 Super Last Minute NaNoWriMo Prompts
October 30, 2017

NaNoWriMo starts in exactly two days and every writer on twitter is either jumping with excitement or trying not to cry with despair. It's the most exhilarating and terrifying month of the year. If you're not in the know, NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month, and is hosted by the Non-Profit Group NaNoWriMo. It's a challenge to write 50,000 words in one month, which is roughly 1667 words per day. So let's get down to it, what exactly are you going to write?

Here's What You Need To Know . . .
October 27, 2017

As I'm getting ready to start this grand experiment into running my author's website and blog, after managing other business' pages for over three years, I'm reminded of an open mic night or any reading, actually. I'm standing at the podium (or in my undergraduate days, standing in the middle of the smoker's patio with a security light shining behind me on a semi-frigid night right before mid-terms) and all eyes are on me. I've been practicing my reading for a week straight, nipped and tucked to fit a scene into a five-minute time slot, and have decided this is as good as it's going to get.
