Why I'm Not Writing This Week 4/17

Why I'm Not Writing This Week.png

Welcome to the Why I’m Not Writing This Week series!

If you’re not familiar with this series, just know that the only thing writers love more than writing is avoiding writing. And I am definitely no exception. Every Friday, I list five things that distracted me from my writing this week.

I encourage you to share with me your reasons for not writing every week too and I’ll share my favorites in the latest edition.

Happy Easter

It definitely didn’t feel like it around here, but this past Sunday was Easter Sunday. I wasn’t able to visit my family or go to big Easter service at church, but I did get to video chat with my family and we had a community service of our own. I also got a beautiful bulb garden from my mom for the occasion.

Fluctuating Weather

Our weather has been swinging between beautiful, sunny spring weather to raging, crazy storms to chilly frost. It’s been wreaking havoc on our budding garden and also on my allergies. The only good news is that I’m spending a ton of time inside right now, so at least I’m not inhaling too much pollen so far this year.

A Visit To The Cat Doc

We noticed our cat has been doing a lot of “coughing” without actually spitting up any hairballs lately. Things seemed to be getting worse, so we took him to the vet on Wednesday. Turns out little Gatsby has feline asthma. Who knew that was a thing? He got a steroid shot and are monitoring him for the next month.

Harry Potter

This week, while I’m working every day, I’ve been listening to a Harry Potter audiobook series. I’m still on the first book right now, but it’s been a lot of fun indulging in some easy listening with one fo my favorite series.

Dalgona Coffee

I tried this crazy coffee trend I’ve been seeing around social media. It’s advertised as being super easy to make with just a few ingredients: instant coffee, sugar, water and milk. I found it wasn’t quite as easy as all the online recipes I found said, but it still made me feel like I was having a gourmet Starbucks coffee without leaving home.

What The Truman Show Taught Me About Settings
April 9, 2018

Recently, my husband and I watched The Truman Show on Netflix. I had first watched this movie in middle school as a part of my language arts class. It had a huge impact on me and when I found out Daniel had never seen it before, I was excited to show it to him. The movie lived up to my memory and, in talking to Daniel about it, it also gave me a writing epiphany!

Speed Up or Slow Down? How to Ace Your Fiction Pace - A Guest Post By Margaret McNellis
January 22, 2018

Pacing in fiction has always been one of my great struggles because I get excited about a scene idea and rush to get there. It’s finally sinking in though that I need to slow down in order to get the interiority I want for my narrator and protagonist. But how do you slow down the pace of a scene? The trick is knowing when to show versus tell.

10 Super Last Minute NaNoWriMo Prompts
October 30, 2017

NaNoWriMo starts in exactly two days and every writer on twitter is either jumping with excitement or trying not to cry with despair. It's the most exhilarating and terrifying month of the year. If you're not in the know, NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month, and is hosted by the Non-Profit Group NaNoWriMo. It's a challenge to write 50,000 words in one month, which is roughly 1667 words per day. So let's get down to it, what exactly are you going to write?

Here's What You Need To Know . . .
October 27, 2017

As I'm getting ready to start this grand experiment into running my author's website and blog, after managing other business' pages for over three years, I'm reminded of an open mic night or any reading, actually. I'm standing at the podium (or in my undergraduate days, standing in the middle of the smoker's patio with a security light shining behind me on a semi-frigid night right before mid-terms) and all eyes are on me. I've been practicing my reading for a week straight, nipped and tucked to fit a scene into a five-minute time slot, and have decided this is as good as it's going to get.
